Application for a new plumbing contractor licence.
A plumbing contractor’s licence allows the holder to take responsibility for plumbing work, carry out the job themselves, and guide or supervise qualified tradespeople doing the work. It also lets them oversee apprentices and trainees. If an LPC is doing or supervising hands‑on trade‑level work, they must be working under the general direction of another licensed plumbing contractor who is responsible for the overall job.

Before you apply

1. You'll need: 

  • A tradesperson’s licence or a tradesperson’s licence (drainage plumbing) 
  • A copy of statement of competency as a water supply plumber, sanitary plumber and/or drainer.

After your application has been submitted

Licence applications typically take 4-6 weeks to process. We’ll contact you if we need any additional information, and you’ll receive an email once your licence has been finalised.

Variations to a plumbing contractor’s licence

Plumbing contractor’s licences may be limited to one or more of the following types of work:

  • water supply
  • sanitary
  • drainage

Licence/registration search

The online licence search can help you find a licensed plumbing contractor or check your licence status. 

How to use the online licence search

Search by number: You can check if a licence number is still valid. Type the number into the field on the opening screen.

Search by type of licence: You can look for licensed people in your neighbourhood. Click on ‘Type’. Start typing in the licence type in the box eg. debt collector. Then type in either a name or location.
