Automated vehicles and the readiness of Western Australian Roads (Phase 2): Suitability of WA Roads for Lane Departure Warning Systems

Research and analysis
The aim of this research was to further assess the readiness of WA roads for autonomous vehicles by investigating the suitability of lane markings in remote areas for lane departure warning systems.
Last updated:

The research found:

  • A variety of lane marking types tested along a stretch of highway in remote WA caused the lane departure warning system to give appropriate warnings, both during day and night-time and in areas where red dirt was present on the road.
  • Remote roads may be suitable for vehicles with lane departure warning technology.

Road safety benefit:
The research was beneficial to the extent that Government received a report giving an overview of the suitability of lane departure warning systems on highways in remote WA. However, the report recommended further research to include similar testing with a variety of road types, vehicles and lane departure warning systems.
