Mining Industry Summit: Driving Respect report

Aim of the event

In response to the “Enough is Enough” report into sexual harassment against women in the FIFO mining industry, which was tabled in Parliament in July 2022, the WA Government, in collaboration with industry and the unions, organised the Mining Industry Summit: Driving Respect.

The aim of the Mining Industry Summit was to educate, inspire and empower WA mining industry leaders to drive respect and take meaningful action towards preventing and responding to workplace sexual harassment.

About the event

Held at Optus Stadium on 1 August 2023, the Mining Industry Summit: Driving Respect brought together 1200 attendees from across the WA mining sector who could contribute to driving and influencing lasting cultural change.

This included CEOs, board members, site senior executives, industry bodies, operational, HSE and HR leaders, as well as union representatives and elected health and safety representatives.

The event program featured keynote speakers, panel discussions, and case studies from respected experts across government, industry, and academia.

Keynote speakers included Professor Sharon Parker, Dr Dean Laplonge and Former Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins AO.

The Mental Awareness, Respect and Safety (MARS) Program, an interagency initiative that involves DMIRS in partnership with the Department of Communities, the Mental Health Commission, and the Equal Opportunity Commission provided a showcase featuring nine program initiatives, with displays and information about their individual programs.

Circle Green, MATES in Mining and Relationships Australia provided trained support counsellors onsite in case of trauma.

There was also a one-hour mining industry networking event at the conclusion of presentations.
