The MARS Program has funded a range of initiatives to improve mental health and wellbeing in the mining industry.

Thrive at Work in Mining Masterclass series - for senior leaders 

Masterclass series for senior leaders in:

  • human resources workforce strategy work safety
  • well-being related functions in mining
  • compilation of three (3) case studies
  • capstone event at conclusion of series.
  • Participants are guided through the Thrive at Work Framework to unpack how mining workplaces can support all employees to get well, stay well and be the best they can be.

The training modules will cover key concepts of mental health, respect, alcohol and other drugs and legal and moral rights and responsibilities.

Thrive at Work in Mining Masterclass series - FOWI Community of Practice 

Funded by the MARS program – the program offers a series of online and face-to- face training modules aiming to build more respectful workplace cultures and support for mental health and wellbeing.

Following from Phase 1 Masterclass series for senior leaders, the FOWI Community of Practice is building capability of mining workplaces to prevent harm and protect against psychological risks.

  • Evidence-based Thrive at Work Framework
  • Apply toolkits from Phase 1
  • Engage Phase 2 cohort in Community of Practice.

Thrive at Work is a ground-breaking workplace mental health and well-being initiative centred on designing work that supports employees, organisations and industry to thrive.

Trauma Informed Investigations Training  (subsidised courses)

A specialist training program where you will increase your skills to respond to, investigate and/or manage incidents of sexual harassment in a trauma-informed fashion, reducing the risk of re-traumatisation & causing further harm.

This Two-Level 4-Day program is heavily subsidised by the Mental Awareness Respect & Safety (MARS) Program

  • First 2 days of the program = Level 1: Do No Harm: Support and Trauma Informed Considerations
  • Last 2 days of the program = Level 2 Natural Justice: Reporting, Investigation & Dealing with Authorities

Respect in Mining Program

Funded by the MARS program, the Respect in Mining Program is designed to support small and medium mining organisations to increase awareness and knowledge of the gendered drivers of violence, the impact of gender inequality on women’s safety and economic security, and the impact of gendered division in leadership and decision making.

A whole of organisation approach is taken to embed gender equality policies and practices to benefit all employees.

It will increase awareness and knowledge of the:

  • gendered drivers of violence
  • impact of gender inequality on women’s safety and economic security
  • impact of gendered division in leadership and decision making.

Organisations are provided with a set of tools, resources and supporting implementation guide to assist them to embed gender equality policies to benefit all employees.

Regulatory capability resources

PwC regulatory capability review

Improving WorkSafe Mines Safety’s Regulatory capability in responding to incidents of sexual harassment and sexual assault on mine sites.

Actions include:

  • completion of psychosocial training for all Mines Safety inspectors completed
  • refinement of new triage model post introduction of WHS and after-hours response
  • development of a comprehensive data management system for WorkSafe to improve monitoring, reporting, data collection and information sharing

Mining & Energy Union bystander training

The Mining and Energy Union, on behalf of Western Mineworkers Alliance, has developed and piloted the “Sexual harassment awareness training for mine workers.”

The MEU is currently assessing sessions held, an evaluation report is to follow.
