Awarded to a lecturer or educator who demonstrates excellence in a field of STEM education in a tertiary setting (university and/or registered training organisation), and who has made outstanding contributions to enhancing student engagement in STEM.
Now in its 24th year, the Premier's Science Awards recognises and celebrates the outstanding scientific research and engagement taking place in Western Australia.
This year, 2 finalists have been selected for the inaugural STEM Educator of the Year (Tertiary) category:
Dr Janene Sproul
Murdoch University
As a STEM educator and researcher, Janene extends tertiary learning beyond the laboratory into communities. Drawing on 25 years of high school science teaching, volunteer work and a PhD in inclusive pedagogy, she empowers students to apply their theoretical knowledge in real world situations.
Janene’s collaborative approach fosters student agency through environmental action, food gardens and reconnecting with nature. She models network building that extends beyond graduation and partnerships with community and industry. Her work combines inclusive practices with a passion for STEM education and research connecting it with everyday life.
Dr Rina Wong (Fu)
Curtin University
Scientist-artist Dr Rina Wong (Fu), is dedicated to inspiring people of all ages and abilities through creative, multimodal science engagement. She integrates original science songs, illustrated storybooks, radio broadcasts, her award-winning animated film - MicroToons, and her medical research into tertiary education.
Renowned nationally and internationally for making science fun, Rina also makes complex science accessible including for the deaf communities and people living with autism. Rina develops innovative digital tools to enhance learning. Her outreach initiatives build STEM capabilities by fostering confidence and communication skills, connecting students with scientists across academia and industry to promote STEM beyond traditional settings.
