WA Biodiscovery Bill: Phase 3 stakeholder engagement

Provide your views in the next phase of consultation to develop the WA Biodiscovery Bill
Last updated:

The WA Biodiscovery Bill will provide a framework for accessing Western Australia's native plants and animals for use in biodiscovery research.

We have developed proposals for the key requirements of the Bill, and a possible process model for how biodiscovery activities could be carried out. To achieve this, we consulted other WA government agencies involved in managing WA’s native resources, and included feedback from Aboriginal people, researchers and businesses.

Phase 3 of consultation will start soon. It will include further testing of a possible process model. We will also be developing a framework for the Traditional Knowledge Code of Practice. The Code will set out guidelines for how to identify Traditional Knowledge Custodians for consent and benefit sharing.
