One - Buy a tree

Visit any Western Australian commercial nursery or garden centre to purchase your native tree.

Think about where on your property you will plant your tree and choose a tree that best suits your space and region. Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Location matters: ensure the size of the planting location in your garden is suitable for the tree. Choose a location that matches the sunlight / shade requirements of your tree.
  • Check proximity: be cautious of proximity to underground utilities, buildings and fences.
  • Support local wildlife: choose a tree that provides habitat and food for local wildlife.
  • Go waterwise: opt for a tree that is suited to our climate and needs less water.

Two - Plant your tree

Step 1 - Dig a hole. Using a shovel, dig a hole that is about twice the width of the tree’s root system and slightly deeper than its height. Make sure the hole is big enough to completely cover all the tree’s roots with soil.

Step 2 - Wet your tree. Water the tree in its pot until it is thoroughly soaked.

Step 3 - Improve the soil. To help your tree to thrive, mix soil improver into the hole and the soil you'll use for backfilling.

Step 4 – Plant your tree. Gently slide the root system out of the pot, keeping it intact. Place the tree in the middle of the hole and fill it with soil, pressing down gently to eliminate gaps. Ensure all roots are completely covered.

Step 5 – Apply mulch, ideally a layer 5 – 7.5 cm thick. Mulch helps to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Step 6 – Water your tree. Once your tree is in the ground, give it a thorough watering. Remember to water it regularly until it is established.

Your nursery or garden centre is a great source of advice for how to care for your tree.
