One - Buy up to five trees
Visit any Western Australian commercial nursery or garden centre to purchase your native trees.
Think about where on your property you will plant your trees and choose trees that best suits your property, available space and local climate.
- Location matters: make sure there is enough space for the tree to reach its mature size and that the site meets its sunlight and shade requirements.
- Check proximity: be cautious of proximity to underground utilities, buildings and fences.
- Support local wildlife: choose a tree that provides habitat and food for local wildlife.
- Go waterwise: choose species suited to your local climate that require less water once established.
Two - Plant your trees
Step 1 - Dig a hole. Prepare the hole about twice the width of the tree’s root system and slightly deeper than its height. Make sure the hole is big enough to completely cover all the tree’s roots with soil.
Step 2 - Water your tree. Thoroughly water the tree in its pot until it is soaked.
Step 3 - Improve the soil. To help your tree to thrive, mix soil improver into the hole and the soil you'll use for backfilling.
Step 4 – Plant your tree. Gently slide the root system out of the pot, keeping it intact. Place the tree in the middle of the hole and fill it with soil, pressing down gently to eliminate gaps. Ensure all roots are completely covered.
Step 5 – Apply a layer of mulch 5 – 7.5 cm thick. Mulch helps to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Step 6 – Water your tree. Once your tree is in the ground, water it thoroughly. Remember to water it regularly until it is established.
