Travel and Accommodation Allowance for apprentices and trainees

The Department of Training and Workforce Development assists eligible apprentices with a Travel and Accommodation Allowance (TAA) related to the completion of their off the job training component.

Apprentices and trainees are eligible for travel and accommodation allowance (TAA) if they are a Western Australian resident attending a training provider (eg TAFE) for off the job training and must travel more than 70 kms (round trip) from their residential address to attend the closest training provider.

Eligibility for the Travel and Accommodation Allowance

Apprentices and trainees may be eligible for travel and /or accommodation allowance if they:

  • travel more than 70kms to attend off the job training with a training provider who is funded by the Department of Training and Workforce Development; and
  • have an active or suspended training contract during the claimed period; and
  • have a residential address within Western Australia.

Apprentices and trainees may not be eligible for travel and /or accommodation allowance if they:

  • have a training contract that is withdrawn, cancelled, terminated, completed, pending or expired at the time the approved training was undertaken; or
  • are paid a travel and accommodation allowance by their employer to attend off the job training; or
  • have an employer who incurs the total cost of their travel and accommodation; or
  • travel to attend training at a location that is not the closest training venue approved that delivers the required off the job training.

How to submit a claim 

TAA claims must be submitted through the TAA online client portal in the Western Australian Apprenticeship Management System (WAAMS), by WAAMS portal account holders.

To register for a WAAMS account, go to the WAAMS portal page and request a portal invitation.

Once you have registered as a WAAMS user, you can submit your TAA claim through the TAA online claims portal.

All claims for the TAA must be submitted within 60 days of the:

  • last day of each block training period; or
  • date of attendance at each day of day release training.

Claims submitted after the 60 day limit will be ineligible for the TAA.
