Former servicemen, a fire and rescue volunteer and Department of Child Protection worker were among the latest recruits to graduate from the Corrective Services Academy.

Despite their different professional backgrounds, the 23 graduates from the Prison Officer Entry Level Training Program Class 231 all have one thing in common – a passion for rehabilitation.

"I was a hairdresser for 21 years but decided I wanted to do more to help my community," said Officer Byrne.

"We all have different strengths and together we make a strong team."

At the ceremony, Officer Free was presented the Achievement Award.

"I didn’t consider myself a potential winner at all and hearing my name was a massive shock," said Officer Free.

"I am very proud that the course leaders and delegates nominated me."

Department of Justice Director General, Dr Adam Tomison commended training staff for consistently turning out quality prison officers.

"Family and friends also play and important role in supporting recruits as they go through the course," he said.

"It is fantastic that the easing of COVID-19 restrictions meant they could be in attendance today for the first time since the height of the pandemic."
