Testing and tagging

In Western Australia, testing and tagging of electrical equipment is regulated under workplace safety laws, rather than through an electrical licensing framework. A person does not need to hold an electrician’s licence to test and tag electrical equipment; however, they must be assessed as competent and meet specific training requirements.

In WA, testing and tagging may be carried out by:

  • A licensed electrician, or
  • A competent person who has completed nationally recognised training in testing and tagging

A competent person is someone who has successfully completed an accredited course delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and holds a Statement of Attainment covering the safe inspection and testing of electrical equipment using a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT).
