We’re glad you’re thinking about applying for a WA public sector graduate, cadetship or vacation program.

The WA public sector is building a workforce that reflects the community it serves which means we welcome people from all backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.

We know that starting a job application can feel daunting. These tips help you to understand what’s expected and how to put your best foot forward when you apply.

Application tips

Check your eligibility

  • Before you apply, take a moment to check the eligibility requirements for the program you’re interested in as these can differ between agencies.
Education: Some programs require a specific qualification, discipline, completion  date or academic average. Make sure you meet these requirements before submitting your application.
  • Working rights: Programs that may lead to ongoing (permanent) employment often require Australian citizenship or permanent residency. Other opportunities may be open to people with valid working rights for the length of the program. If you’re unsure about this, email or telephone the agency contact using the details at the bottom of the program page.

Read the job ad carefully

Take the time to read the job advertisement and any attached information so you’re clear on what your application must include.

  • Check what documents you need to provide such as a CV and cover letter addressing the selection criteria.
  • Pay close attention to the closing date and time as late applications won’t be accepted.

Addressing selection criteria

When responding to selection criteria, use real examples from your study, work, volunteering or other experiences. It can help to briefly explain the situation, what was expected of you, what you did, the outcome you achieved and what you learned. This gives assessors a clearer picture of your skills and how you approach different situations. You don’t need to have ‘big’ examples – everyday experiences still count.

Accessibility and reasonable adjustments

The WA public sector is an inclusive employer. If you have access requirements or need reasonable adjustments at any stage of the recruitment process, you are encouraged to let the agency know.

These requests are a standard part of inclusive recruitment and will not disadvantage your application.

Using AI tools

Some applicants choose to use AI tools to help get started with their application. If you do, make sure the final version reflects you. Your own voice, experiences and motivations are what make your application genuine and help you stand out.

Preparing your application

Before you hit submit, take a moment to review your application. Check for spelling and grammar, make sure your details are up to date, and confirm you’ve included everything that’s been asked for. If you can, it can help to have someone else look over your application and provide feedback before you submit it.
