To be successful in the role of a Prison Officer or in the Special Operations Group you are required to demonstrate:

  • Excellent team working skills to work with colleagues and prisoners to achieve personal and professional goals

  • An awareness and understanding of Aboriginal people and their culture

If you have been previously employed as a Prison Officer or Special Operations Group (Prison Officer) with Department of Justice, Western Australia within the last two years and have completed your probation, complete the custodial staff re-engagement online form.

The SOG operates 24 hours a day in order to provide a state-wide response to emergency situations as required.
We are recruiting for two specific roles - Prison Officers for various regional and metropolitan locations across Western Australia as well as Special Operations Group for vacancies at Canning Vale, Perth.

Prison Officer

There are 16 public prisons across Western Australia that offer a diverse range of facilities and interactions with minimum to maximum security prisoners. You are further supported on the job by experienced staff and management as you work together as a team to keep everyone safe, including the community.

Special Operations Group (Prison Officer)

The Special Operations Group (SOG) provides specialist 24/7-armed emergency response and security support services for all correctional facilities within WA.  SOG also conducts searching, high-security escorts, surveillance and intelligence gathering, specialist training and exercising. SOG is based in Canning Vale in the Perth metro area.

Working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, SOG Officers are able to recognise, respect and work with gender, social and cultural differences, including with Aboriginal people.

You will receive comprehensive training, before joining a committed, dedicated and disciplined team. You will operate advanced and specialist equipment while protecting our facilities, our people, those in our care and the community.

You will need to be physically capable, psychologically resilient and exemplify behaviours which demonstrate a flexible work ethic, integrity, good judgement, self-discipline, and initiative.

Eligibility to Apply

You must be an Australian citizen or hold Australian permanent residency, or New Zealand citizenship to be considered for permanent appointments and you must have a current C class driver licence (automatic licence is accepted).

All employees are required to undergo employment screening, which includes a National Criminal History Check and other checks that may be relevant to the position requirements.
