About the program
The Trainee Fisheries and Marine Officer Program provides a structured pathway into a permanent enforcement and compliance career with the department.

Program overview
- Multiple permanent, full time positions available
- 2026/2027 intake
- Positions located across Western Australia
- 4 months of paid, structured training commencing early September 2026
Training
As a trainee, you will complete 4 months of paid training at the department's South Fremantle Marine Operations Centre, including:
- Classroom based and practical learning
- 3 weeks of supported in field experience across the Perth Metropolitan Area
- Hands on exposure to compliance, enforcement and community engagement activities
Training is fully paid. Travel, accommodation and relocation costs while undertaking training are the responsibility of the trainee. Relocation support may be available following training when moving to a district placement.
Post training placement
After you’ve completed your training, you will be deployed to one of the department's district office locations across the state, which you’ll nominate during the application process.
You may be eligible to apply for promotion to Fisheries and Marine Officer Level 3 once you’ve worked as a Trainee Fisheries and Marine Officer for 12 months.

- Help protect Western Australia’s fisheries
- Enforce fisheries and marine legislation
- Educate the community and industry on sustainable fishing practices
- Respond to incidents and compliance issues
- Liaise with stakeholders and the public
- Work outdoors in marine and regional environments

What we are looking for
We are seeking motivated individuals who are committed to public service and capable of working in complex, sometimes challenging environments.
Experience working or undertaking activities at sea is desirable but not essential. Relevant maritime or marine qualifications will be viewed favourably.

- sound judgement and high standards of professional behaviour
- strong problem solving skills and the ability to see tasks through to completion
- clear communication and community engagement skills

Eligibility and conditions
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Hold (or obtain prior to appointment) a current National Police Certificate
- Meet all law enforcement suitability requirements
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is an Emergency Management Agency, and employees may be required to work or travel outside normal hours in response to incidents or emergencies.
This recruitment pool will remain valid for 24 months and may be used to fill similar vacancies statewide. Placement in the pool does not guarantee an offer of employment.
