The Skills Academy

For the first time, the WA public sector is taking a one sector approach to learning and development to build core skills needed now and into the future.

The Skills Academy is a different way of advancing capability, one that focuses on practical, relevant and impactful learning and applying this to everyday work.

It’s tailored specifically for the WA public sector context, building courses with different learning formats and activities that together form a cohesive learning journey.

There are 49 courses now live on The Skills Academy platform.

Built by the sector, for the sector

More than 200 subject matter experts from across the sector are identifying content for the courses in The Skills Academy. Specialist curriculum developers are using this content to design courses in line with how adults learn and embed new skills in their everyday work.

A new digital platform is the central destination for learners and a dedicated service centre in Perth supports participating agencies.

The Skills Academy is being led and managed by the Public Sector Commission for the government and sector.

How have the courses been chosen?

The courses are deliberately aligned to the Public Sector Commission’s Agency Capability Framework which sets out the areas needed for agencies to be considered high performing in the WA public sector.

The Skills Academy courses directly help agencies to skill their staff in these areas so individuals, teams and the agencies themselves can perform at their best.

Which agencies are included as part of The Skills Academy?

There are 56 agencies participating in The Skills Academy for those staff primarily covered by the Public Sector Civil Service Association (PSCSA) Agreement.

How is my agency preparing for The Skills Academy?

The Skills Academy team is working with participating agencies to prepare as courses are released and to understand their requirements under Commissioner’s Instruction 54: The Skills Academy.

Each agency has a dedicated learning manager (or learning managers) leading this important initiative. The learning manager helps their agency and its learners make the most of The Skills Academy by aligning agency capability needs with learning opportunities.
