Foster carers play a vital role in changing the lives of vulnerable children and young people by providing support, nurturing, guidance, and love. Here are some of their stories.

Pat and Rhyce

Pat and Rhyce

Since 1986, Pat and Rhyce have cared for 90 different children and young people. They are recognised for their willingness to engage with family members and support the parents and family carers of those young people they worked with.

Chelsea

Chelsea

Chelsea and Matt became foster carers to make a difference in their community and set an example for their own three children. They have been fostering a young Aboriginal child since she was six months old and have built and maintained strong relationships with her parents and siblings in the four years they’ve been caring for her.

Hannah

Hannah

Hannah and her husband currently care for four children. The eldest is 12 years old and the three younger children are siblings, aged four, five and six. Hannah has fostered the three younger siblings since birth as she believes it is vital to keep siblings under the one roof, connected to each other and connected to culture.

Barry, Anthea and Burditt

Barry

Anthea and Burditt began fostering in 1997, when Barry came into their home as a three-year-old. Barry, while acknowledging his birth family, regards his foster carers as ‘Mum’ and ‘Dad’, and honoured his deep connection by taking their surname when he turned 18.

Michelle and Carly

Michelle and Carly

Michelle and Carly first became foster carers for the Department of Communities in 2014 and they are currently providing long-term care for four children, aged between one and eight. Michelle and Carly are acknowledged for the high-level of care they provide to children, and their passion for caring for vulnerable children.

Karen and Scott

Karen and Scott

Since Karen and Scott became foster carers in 2000, they have looked after at least 42 children and young people, including several sibling groups. They have provided emergency, short-break, temporary and permanent care. The child in their current care has been with them since 2011. Another young person who has lived with them since 2004 is now a young adult studying at university to become a nurse.

Kate

Kate

Kate and her family have cared for children in foster care for the last 12 years and have had the privilege of being a safe harbour and walking beside children in care for part of their journey. As a foster carer, Kate has assisted with the reunification of children with their parents and families.

Ali

Ali

Ali was approved as a family carer in 2009 and then as a general foster carer with her husband, Les in August 2020. Ali and Les have supported more than 10 children, in different situations such as emergency care, regular short-term care and longer-term care.
