Organise a funeral or memorial service

There are several things you need to consider when organising a funeral or memorial service.

We are testing the Alpha stage of the 'End of life' guide. If you find this guide useful or would like to report an error, please leave us a comment below.

After someone has died you will need to decide whether to hold a burial, cremation or memorial service:

  • At a funeral, a service is held before the body is buried or cremated.
  • A memorial service is held when the body of the loved one is not present.
  • A graveside service is like a funeral but takes place at the gravesite.

Regardless of the type of service, you will need to choose a location such as a funeral home, church or synagogue.

A funeral director is not compulsory but recommended to help guide you through this process.
